Using a “handheld mobile phone”<\/span> while driving is illegal<\/em>. It has been since 2003.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From 1 March 2017 the penalties for holding and using your phone while driving have increased.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s now 6 points and \u00a3200.<\/p>\n

It is not illegal to use hands free<\/strong>, but any time a driver\u2019s attention is not on the road can be dangerous.<\/p>\n

Advice to keep it simple:…<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n– Keep your mobile phone in a cradle or glove box<\/span><\/p>\n

– You can\u2019t touch the phone if it\u2019s in a cradle, even if you stop at lights and even if your parked up with the engine on<\/p>\n

– If you want to use the sat nav on a mobile or plug the charger in. You must set it up before keys are in the ignition and don\u2019t touch it once engine is on<\/p>\n

– You can\u2019t scroll for tracks on your mobile while driving so have your playlist set up before entering the car<\/p>\n

– Handheld mobile phone can only be used if your parked up safely with engine off and keys out of ignition (Wireless keys – engine off)<\/p>\n

– You can use a mobile phone via built in-car technology like Bluetooth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

– You can\u2019t use headphones<\/p>\n

– You can\u2019t move your phone while the engine is on<\/p>\n

– Rules apply to PDAs also<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong><\/span>
\n– 2.5 deaths a week due to a driver using a mobile phone<\/p>\n

– No verbal warnings<\/p>\n

The facts<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

  • Studies show that drivers using a hands-free or handheld mobile phone are slower at recognising and reacting to hazards.<\/li>\n
  • Even careful drivers can be distracted by a call or text \u2013 and a split-second lapse in concentration could result in a crash.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The Law<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    • It’s illegal to hold a handheld mobile<\/strong> when driving. This includes using your phone to follow a map, read a text or check social media. This applies even if you\u2019re stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic.<\/li>\n
    • You can only use a handheld phone<\/strong> if you are safely parked or need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it\u2019s unsafe or impractical to stop.<\/li>\n
    • If you\u2019re caught using a handheld phone<\/strong> while driving, you\u2019ll get 6 penalty points on your licence and a fine of \u00a3200.<\/li>\n
    • Using hands free<\/strong> is not illegal<\/strong>. However, if this distracts you and affects your ability to drive safely, you can still be prosecuted by the police.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
